W.TEC Marks 2018 International Girls In ICT Day In Lagos & Kwara

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre – W.TEC recently marked the 2018 International Girls in ICT Day with a comprehensive programme of events for secondary school female students between the ages of 13- 17 from select schools across Nigeria; i.e. Lagos and Kwara State. The event is organized by W.TEC through it’s after school computer club for girls program (W.TEC Academy) which is currently in session in Ilorin, Kwara State.
W.TEC’s International Girls in ICT Day events was geared towards achieving the aim of objectives for the International Girls in ICT Day  an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to create a global environment that empowers and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication.
W.TEC thus marked the day in a big way with the following programmes:

  1. An ICT career talks session with 100 Snr. secondary school students of Reagan Memorial Baptist Girl Secondary School, Yaba Lagos on the 25th, April 2018. The session was facilitated by Mrs. Folashade Braimoh the Programme Manager of W.TEC.
  2. A website design hackathon and career awareness session with 100 students of Laureates College, Mafoluku, Lagos on the 26th, April, 2018. The programme was anchored by Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi the Executive Director of W.TEC and Ms. Chidiogo Victor Willie of Oracle.
  3. A 1- day ICT seminar held on May 2nd, 2018 in collaboration with Oracle and the Ministry of Education – Kwara State for participants of  W.TEC Academy in Ilorin – W.TEC’s after -school technology training scheme for female students in secondary schools. The programme was facilitated by Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi the Executive Director of W.TEC and Dr (Mrs) Adeyeye Rebecca Oluwayemisi a business development consultant and the managing director of Lifefount international hospital.

Main Objectives of the Programme
The main aim of W.TEC’s programme was to comprehensively inspire and broaden the horizons of a larger amount of girls across the nation on the need to have more women in the Nigerian Tech space by encouraging more girls to consider taking future careers in ICT.
