The W.TEC Academy at Ilorin, has commenced its 2nd session for the 2018 – 2019 school year with an impactful curriculum featuring digital design with Corel Draw and advanced Microsoft Word to make the tech learning experience for participants a unique one.
W.TEC Academy is an after school initiative of W.TEC which supports computer education in schools with comprehensive curriculums and practical sessions to help upgrade the exposure of girls to good quality ICT education in public schools with the aim to attract and inspire more girls to studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) courses.
The Ilorin programme of the Academy which started in January 2018 was conducted at 7 secondary schools in the Kwara State capital with a total of 140 girls who were selected to participate in its sessions on; introduction to basics of computer, followed by practical sessions on tools of Microsoft office.
Apart from workshops our participants has also been involved in other activities. For instance our Academy participants who attended our 2018 SheCreates Camp in Lagos, paid a courtesy call on the Permanent Secretary and Honorable Commissioner of Kwara State Ministry of Education to mark the ‘’International day of the girl child’’ where they presented all what they had learnt at the camp and the Academy.
Currently the ongoing programme is holding at 9 centres in Ilorin for a total of 200 girls. The workshops of the programme are facilitated by trained volunteers who conduct the sessions at the computer lab of the schools. The National Library Ilorin Branch is one of our partners for the programme which host one of our participating schools at its elibrary centre.
According to early feedback from our participants, their practical digital design sessions have been very exciting as they got to design flags, fliers, posters and others, thus they are looking forward to learning more next year after the Christmas break.
