The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) hosted an event at the recently held 2019 Social Media Week Lagos programme.
The event tagged: Storytelling Techniques for Amplifying Social Impact fundraising , took place at the SMW Lagos Campus, Landmark Centre, Water Corporation Road, Victoria Island Annex, Lagos, Nigeria.
The Social Media Week is a global week-long programme, which takes place in several cities across the world simultaneously and which showcases the brightest and best minds discussing, exploring, debating and learning about the impact of social media on our lives.

The event facilitators were:
- Oreoluwa Lesi – Founder / Executive Director, W.TEC
- Olamide Egbayelo – Chief Strategist – Hexal Place
The W.TEC event, “Storytelling Techniques for amplifying social impact’’ taught the participants the following majorly:
- The Strategy of Storytelling
- How Storytelling is important in the increase of social impact
- The Anatomy of a good story
- Also how to build a culture of storytelling anywhere you are
The masterclass was facilitated by The Executive Director of W.TEC, Oreoluwa Lesi and The Chief Strategist, Hexal Place,Olamide Egbayelo who both shared with the house from their rich experience on management of non-profits and international donor relationships.

- Identify the website that works for you when telling a story.
- Know what story you are telling and also know your audience because there is nothing like general audience”
- When telling a story, make sure it is different, catchy, and could be easily understood by your readers or viewers.
- You need to understand the impact of your stories can have on audience be it minors, people with disabilities, beliefs, race, sexuality and others.
- Your stories must have a past present and future
- You may need to hire a good writer to do your stories as writing is an art
Highlights of Olamide Egbayelo’s presentation
- Make your stories must always be catchy
- Identify the website that works for you
- You don’t need an expensive camera before you can a report a story, you can shoot with your phones or any available gadget.
- You need to have a genuine narrative that will be compelling to potential donors and be transparent.
- Ethics of story writing; copyright issues, age issues and others
- Tag people you wish to get their attention but not in a harassing manner
The event also featured a practical story telling session which was supervised by Olamide Egbayelo who had the participants form groups to come up with imaginary stories to the house.
The event, was well attended by men and women of different organizations, universities, online followers, business owners, and the public at large. They were attentive and very coordinated which really made the session an interesting and impactful one.
Furthermore the event ended with a Q & A session, where the audience got to ask good storytelling related questions from the facilitators mostly on how to come up with ideas, how to tell reasonable stories and how to keep your audience engaged.
