Lagos, Nigeria – 15 April, 2019: The Children’s Development Centre (CDC) and the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) will organise an event to commemorate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which takes place every March and World Autism Month, which takes place in April.
The Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all areas of community life, as well as awareness to the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live. DD Awareness Month covers three main areas: education, employment and community living. World Autism Month is an internationally recognized month April, encouraging Member States of the United Nations take measures to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the world.
CDC & W.TEC will host a Showcase event on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 to raise awareness of developmental disabilities and celebrate the achievements of its students. The students will showcase skills they have developed through the support services provided by both CDC and W.TEC. There will be demonstrations of these skills through Arts, Bake products, Tie & Dye, and Computer Technology.
The Chief Launchers are Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi (Commissioner of Lagos State Health Services Commission) and Mrs. Joyce Onafowokan (Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Development). The Co-Launchers are Tuebi Abidd (Twale) of Wazobia FM, Dr. Mojeed Bello, Dr. Yewande Oshodi and Mrs. Ronke Nylanda. There will be talks on how early skilled intervention can help people born with developmental disabilities learn the skills they need to live a more productive and independent life. Speakers will also share strategies on how family members can practice physical and mental self-care.
This event will highlight the year-long partnership between CDC and W.TEC, where selected students participate in weekly technology classes. These classes seek to use technology to strengthen learning in the areas of numeracy, literacy and art.
The Children’s Developmental Centre (CDC) is a service-oriented, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated in providing a broad range of educational and support services for children, young people and their families within the community. The centre is developing a local solution to a global problem and is a place where children and young people with developmental disabilities have a “Sense of Belonging”.
It is through the various collaborations and partnerships that CDC, has been able to support children, especially young adults, who have to use what they have, to give the best they can give, that is the real success of the children and the young adults we serve. CDC is committed to ensuring that our clients are able to strive and thrive through making their own decisions, what is being done in their own best interest at the same time being given the same opportunities as everyone else. The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) is a Nigerian nonprofit organisation committed to building a more inclusive technology ecosystem, with the next generation of women technology creators, entrepreneurs and leaders. Our programmes include Science, Technology and Design-themed bootcamps and afterschool clubs for girls and other under-represented youth. Over the last year, our work has expanded to explore how technology can improve learning outcomes and better integrate students with developmental disabilities and special needs, such as Autism and Down’s syndrome.
