The W.TEC after school programme girls (W.TEC Academy) in Kwara State has commenced classes for the 2021 session. The programme is held in public secondary schools at Offa and Ilorin in Kwara State. The intervention initiative for girls which has enrolled 328 students from 13 schools across the state is sponsored by Oracle.
The W.TEC Academy is an afterschool technology club, which presents technology in an engaging way, with the aim of attracting more girls to pursue science and technology careers. The clubs target girls, aged 10 to 17 years, who attend public schools in Lagos. The students go through a practical and engaging curriculum comprised of subjects like programming with Alice and Greenfoot, Mobile Application Development, Computer Architecture, Networking, and Robotics.
Through their participation in the year-long technology clubs, the girls become more confident in writing programmes, developing applications and creating digital content. This programme was designed to complement the existing computer science curriculum in the schools, which tends to focus more on theoretical knowledge than practical experience.
The 2021 school year is featuring more hands sessions weekly on Computer Fundam – entals, how to build Databases with MySQL and Solar Panel circuits using electronics and digital circuits and others.
The the partnership programme of the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) and Oracle is also involves the recruitment of 22 youths who are trained as instructors for the programme. The skills they will acquire during the course of the programme will be immensely be of big help to them too.
According to Tolulope Ibiyeye the Coordinator of W.TEC Academy in Kwara State, she said that the girls have shown good interest in learning and are adapting well to their new subjects.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
