2021 Girls In ICT Day
W.TEC CELEBRATES GIRLS IN ICT DAY 2021 WITH HACKATHON
The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (WTEC) celebrated the Girls in ICT Day 2021 event with the W.TEC Academy girls in a career talk and hackathon session on Thursday May 6, 2021.
The event which had Notable individuals, School Principals and officials, W.TEC staff, volunteers, well-wishers and student participants from seven Kwara State.
Academy schools lasted for about 3 hours with a lot of engaging and educating activities.
The virtual event began with music to keep our participants entertained then proceeded into the opening prayer session, the national anthem, about W.TEC speech and then the welcome address by Executive Director, W.TEC, Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi. The goodwill messages were given by a representative from Oracle, Mrs Oluwaseyifunmi Fadahunsi Durojaiye and a representative from United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Mrs Bolanle Olumekor who shared the UN Secretary General’s #GirlsinICTDay address with participants. We also had our hosts; Mrs Tolulope Ibiyeye and Ayomide Omoniyi to endures a smooth sailing event.
The speakers at the event shared their career journey and experiences with the girls. One of the speakers, a Lecturer at the department of Animal Science, Akwa Ibom State University, Dr Nse Abasi Etim shared with participants her experience and the critical need for more women in ICT towards economic growth. The second speaker, Awa Bousso DRAMÉ, an Early Career Researcher from University College London, shared with participants her amazing journey in ICT which earned her a PhD and how she has been working in many countries at a young age. Our third and fourth speakers, Janet Kamau and Christina Mitine who are representatives from Oracle also spoke on their STEM career journey to inspire the young girls on what to expect.
The highlight of the event was the final stage of the WTEC Kwara State Academy inter school Hackathon where Maryam, a student from Basin Staff College emerged winner. Maryam won the contest after winning a tie -breaker with Happiness from St Claire’s College.
Girls in ICT Day Hackathon was focused on the girls creating a database built with xampp . All participants from participating schools in the Hackathon presented their projects for our judges decisions. The Hackathon session ended in celebration after the Chief Judge, Dr Nse congratulated the winner and the learners.
To end the event, WTEC Program Manager, Mrs Maryam Abdulsalam gave the vote of thanks appreciating everyone who made the event possible and successful.
