In anticipation of the 2024 SheCreates Summer Camp for girls, we are thrilled to share a remarkable story from participants of our after-school computer club for girls, W.TEC Academy. This narrative not only highlights the achievements of our dedicated students but also sets the stage for the incredible experiences awaiting this year’s camp attendees.
At W.TEC Academy, we cultivate an environment where enthusiastic girls with a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) can broaden their horizons and have fun while learning. This commitment to empowering young women in STEM was recently exemplified by a group of talented students from Methodist Girls High School, Yaba – Lagos.
Triumph at the African EDUTECH Conference
Participants from our W.TEC Academy made headlines late last year when they won a prestigious pitch contest at the 5th African EDUTECH Conference in Lagos sponsored by the Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce. One Competing in the “School Pitch Contest,” session for secondary school students, these brilliant girls constructed a chemistry revision mobile app for senior secondary students using App Inventor. Their innovative app stood out among numerous entries, earning them the top prize and showcasing the skills they acquired through W.TEC Academy.
Building mobile apps is one of the many subjects taught at W.TEC Academy. The girls’ success in the contest is a testament to the high-quality education and hands-on experience provided by our program. Their journey from conceptualizing the app to presenting a polished prototype highlights the importance of practical learning and mentorship in nurturing future tech leaders.
The Road Ahead…
Currently, we are collaborating with these exceptional girls to refine their app further. They are conducting usability tests by sharing the app with their peers, gathering valuable feedback that will be instrumental in completing the final version. Our goal is to launch the app live on the Google Play Store, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Beyond this app, the summer team of five super girls at Methodist Girls High School, with the assistance of W.TEC Academy instructors and school teachers, has continued to innovate. They have developed additional apps, which we are excited to share in the near future. These accomplishments demonstrate the lasting impact of W.TEC Academy and the potential for our students to lead in the tech world.
