W.TEC Academy in Kwara State proudly joined the global celebration of International Women’s Day by hosting a special event at St. Anthony Secondary School in Ilorin on March 8th, 2023. With the theme “Inspire Inclusion,” our goal was to empower teenage girls in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and inspire them to pursue careers in STEM.

The event commenced at 9:15 am and was attended by 107 enthusiastic girls, along with three Vice-Principals and one ICT teacher from the school. Divided into two parts, the program began with an educational and mentorship session followed by a hands-on practical session.

During the educational session, our program assistant, Gladys, provided a brief introduction to W.TEC and the significance of International Women’s Day. She shared inspiring stories of women who have excelled in ICT, highlighting their achievements and contributions to the field.

Mrs. Ibiyeye Tolulope, the Kwara State Coordinator, led the mentorship session, encouraging the girls to pursue careers in ICT/STEM. She emphasized the importance of self-belief, continuous learning, mentorship, and the pursuit of dreams. Mrs. Ibiyeye shared testimonials from current W.TEC Academy members, inspiring the girls to aim high and achieve greatness.

In the hands-on practical session, the girls enthusiastically constructed robotic hands using simple materials such as cardboard paper, straws, gum, thread, and needle. Led by Gladys and supported by Mrs. Ibiyeye, the girls worked through the step-by-step procedure with excitement and curiosity.

By 10:05 am, the girls proudly showcased their completed robotic hands, demonstrating their newfound confidence in technology. Mrs. Ibiyeye reiterated the importance of the practical session in dispelling the fear of technology and empowering the girls to explore STEM fields.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, leaving the girls feeling inspired, motivated, and equipped with valuable skills and knowledge in ICT. As we reflect on this memorable day, we are grateful for the opportunity to empower the next generation of female technologists in Kwara State.

We look forward to continuing our mission of inspiring and empowering girls through STEM education, creating a brighter future for all.
