W.TEC CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD WITH 6 SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN LAGOS STATE

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child with a series of panel session themed: “Digital generation. Our generation.”  This celebration was held in the week of October 11, 2021 with participants of the “W.TEC Academy” a technology co-curricular programme by W.TEC for girls in Nigerian secondary schools.
The International Day of the Girl Child was declared by the United Nations with the aim of recognizing girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
The panel session was held at 6 participating schools of the W.TEC Academy in Lagos State. The main event was held at Igbaja Girls Grammar School Surulere, Lagos, featuring Folashade Braimoh and Maryam Abdulsalam who both are Programme Managers at W.TEC. Their presentations aligned with this year’s theme and centered on gender leadership, opportunities in technology for girls, and dispelling myths about STEM.
During the presentations, the girls were encouraged to get involved and make good use of technology in order to bridge the gender gap in STEM. They were also sensitized on digital generation, gender leadership, opportunities in technology for girls, dispelling of STEM myths against girls and theme for the 2021.
Subsequently, the girls had the opportunity to ask questions and also share some challenges they have faced as young girls thriving in their society after which they were provided answers to their delight.
The series of events at the 6 schools had 200 girls in attendance. The day ended with pictures and other interesting activities.
