In November 2019, W.TEC commenced her 2019 – 16 Days of Activism program for the Elimination of Violence against Women and girls. W.TEC supports the movement annually with a series of Safer Internet workshops for girls and women for the past 9 years in secondary schools and higher institutions. The workshops were scripted to reflect the 2019 theme of the campaign: “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape!” The 2019 series of workshops were held in 3 States across Nigeria for the first time to boost the reach of W.TEC’s campaign.
The 2019 campaign by W.TEC was a 3 leg series from November to December:
- STEAMHer Series Workshop: November 27:
W.TEC launched the 2019 campaign with a Safer Internet Workshop in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre in Lagos ( UNIC) for 100 secondary school girls from 7 public schools in Ikoyi – Lagos. The event is also part of a monthly STEAM workshop series tagged STEAMHER Series, held monthly by UNIC and W.TEC. The workshop focused on combating gender based violence with impactful 3 sessions. Mr Eyitayo Samuel of the United States Information Service – USIS Lagos, gave a wonderful presentation on staying safe online techniques for girls while Ms. Nsini Udonta of ProjectAlert / VAW presented the basics of sexual abuse and the proper rules of engagement for girls with adults and the opposite sex. The workshop was rounded-off with an insightful session on self defense techniques for girls, featuring videos and demonstrations led by Adeyemi Odutola, W.TEC’s Communications Officer.
- Safer Internet Workshop in Ilaro – Ogun State: November 28 – The 2nd Safer Internet workshop for girls was held at Yewa College – Ilaro in Ogun State. This was W.TEC’s first Safer internet workshop held in the State in support of the global campaign. The workshop was facilitated by W.TEC’s Program Manager, Mariam Abdulsalam featuring sessions on safer internet techniques for girls and demonstrations of self defence techniques for girls.
- Safer Internet Workshop in Ilorin – Kwara State: December 6 – The 3rd Safer internet workshop held by W.TEC was at Lower Niger Basin Staff College in Ilorin Kwara State. This was the 3rd State in Nigeria to host our Safer internet workshops. The workshop was facilitated by W.TEC Academy State Coordinator for Kwara State, Tolulope Kawthar Ibiyeye. The workshop featured sessions on Staying safe online techniques for girls and demonstrations on of Self defence techniques for girls. The workshop had 200 girls in attendance.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that kicks off annually on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. This year the campaign will be marked under the theme, “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape!”
In recent years, ther have been calling on people from all walks of life to learn more and take a stand against the pervasive rape culture that surrounds us. More so the voices of survivors and activists, through campaigns such as #MeToo, #TimesUp, #Niunamenos, #NotOneMore, #BalanceTonPorc, and others, have put the spotlight on the issue of sexual violence and have reached a crescendo that cannot be silenced or ignored anymore.
