W.TEC Holds its first Virtual Camp for Kids – Early Innovators Camp

Lagos, Nigeria – 10th August, 2020:
The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre – W.TEC recently held her first virtual camp that teaches girls and boys technology in a fun way and utilizes a hands-on and project-based methodology. The camp I s tagged Early Innovators. This will be the 4th edition of the Early Innovators Camp, a STEM Camp (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Maths) slated from July 13th – August 7th on Google meet. This year the Early Innovators Camp is scheduled twice; the second 2020 edition is scheduled for August 3 till Aug 28 with the same modules and benefits as the first.
The 4-week camp was open to girls and boys from age 7 to 12. Due to the pandemic the camp was readjusted from a non- residential camp to a virtual camp in 2020 so as to continue its reach and impact during these times many programmes have been shut down.
The goal of the W.TEC Early Innovators Camp is to create a generation of young programmers, designers, and entrepreneurs who can innovatively build amazing games, apps, and more. The camp aims to making computer programming incredibly fun and engaging for students through game design, animation and video creation. Students will gain the motivation to learn to code in actual development environments while developing real world skills.
For the four-week duration of the camp, 13 girls participated in fun learning sessions on Animation Programming with Scratch, Game Design with Roblox, Video game design with Kodu, Video Production and numerous co – curricular activities such as Career talks, team-building exercises plus sessions on Gender & Leadership).
Through our innovative curricula, student centered approach, and cutting edge technologies, we are certain to enrich the lives of our students with 21st century technology skills. Our seasoned Instructors will guild students to use creative problem solving skills to work through programming problems and use their creativity in an interactive medium.
The long-term goal of the camp is to increase the numbers of Nigerian women and girls working in Science, Technology, Engineering, Design & Maths-related fields, as well as increase the numbers of girls and women using and creating technology for learning, professional and leadership activities.
The camp featured facilitators who are experienced trainers with W.TEC they include Anita Atulobi and Ephriam Edeikeh who were the main facilitators for the camp– Animation Programming (Week 1), Game design with scratch  (Week 2), Video Game Design (Week 3) and Video production (Week 4). We also appreciate our guest speakers who shared with our girls from their pwealth of experience, they included Titilope Adewodu, Preye Egbolibe  and  Joy Ajayi.
On successful completion of the camp, the children were invited to join W.TEC’s Alumnae Network, where they will be kept up to date with future W.TEC and other workshops to build-up their technical skills and network with other camp alumnae.
Camp rewards
All participants will receive digital open badges in alignment with EU competence framework and they will also be issued certificates to this effect.
 
More so, apart from the camps, W.TEC is in full gear in her readjustment of the times with a good number of virtual programmes designed to cater for various needs of women and girls in our society. These include:
* Rebooth: A digital training programme tailored for entrepreneurial women seeking to give their business a boost with select digital skills.
* W.TEC Academy: Is an after school online programme for girls designed to equip school girls with new hands – on digital skills.
* MakeHerSpace: Is a project designed to train select Nigerian ladies to create technology and engineering-based solutions that solve problems in their communities, provide information about career options and exposes them to women working successfully in STEAM. The programme is sponsored by Google
