The women’s Technology Empowerment Centre recently rewarded participants of its photography workshop for girls at Aiyetoro Senior Grammar School in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. The gifts were presented to the girls as an award from our workshop-partners Girls’ Voices for Change in order to support their education, which is one of their major objectives for the programme.
The photography workshop, tagged ”Girls Voices for Change” Photography is a global initiative of  the Girls’ Voices for Change. A programme set up to partner non profits and schools around the world to train girls the art of story telling with photography to empower them with a voice that will enable them share online, matters that affect them within their communities.

The gifts given to the girls were meant to support their education for the rest of their time in school, the gifts include the following were:

  1. Complete set of senior secondary school text books and stationaries
  2. 2 sets of school uniforms
  3. A school bag
  4. A smart watch
  5. A solar rechargeable lamp
  6. Certificate of participation
  7. A public address system for their school

The workshop was a 2 month programme in which many of its participants had never handled a camera before. The girls were thought the following 3 main things:

  2. How to identify possible interesting stories in their community and how to capture them.
  3. How to use Social media sites and to share their story.

The workshop was facilitated by Miss Monsurat Oshinfisan who interestingly was a participant of our 2013 photography and film making workshop at Aunty Ayo Comprehensive High School Lagos. With her experience and training she was able to facilitated the  9 sessions of the workshop with the girls, brilliantly.
On completion of the workshop their pictures were submitted to the Girl’s Voices for Change platform for the global photo contest for all its participants. Thankfully our girls were given participation gifts which were still substantial for their hard work. Furthermore from the original 20 participants who started the training, only 14 of them who met the required level of participation were rewarded.
The presentation of gifts was done at the school in the presence of the management of their school, W.TEC’s management and a representative of Lagos State Ministry of Education District IV who were delighted for the rewarding of their girls.
