W.TEC Set For – 2021 16 Days of Activism Campaign
In November 2021, W.TEC is set to commence her 2021 – 16 Days of Activism program for the Elimination of Violence against Women and girls. W.TEC supports the movement annually with a series of Safer Internet workshops for girls and women for the past 11 years in secondary schools and higher institutions.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. In support of this civil society initiative, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) calls for global actions to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations.
As an organisation focused on empowering women and girls with STEM based skills, W.TEC plans a series of engaging discussion sessions and other online activities for select students of the W.TEC Academy, our technology co-curricular programme for girls in secondary schools, which currently runs in Lagos and Kwara States. The following are our planned activities for this year’s campaign:
- School workshops for girls
- Online Campaign
- Support of panelist sessions by third parties
The focus of the planned workshops for this year’s programme slated for Lagos State and Kwara State will reflect the 2021 theme of the campaign: “Orange the world: End violence against women now!
The events will feature speakers from W.TEC and leading teachers from host schools, whose presentations will center on the following:
- Internet safety for girls.
- New threats women and girls face on the internet
- Internet Security
- Possible help for internet challenges faced by women.
- Q&A Session.
