The Women’s Technology Empowerment Center (W.TEC) celebrated the International Women’s Day (IWD) with a virtual panelist session in collaboration with United Nations Information Centres (UNIC), Lagos on March 8, 2021 by 12pm.
The virtual event which was held on zoom was flagged off with the International Women’s Day (IWD) address of UN Secretary General, António Guterres delivered by the representative of the United Nations, Mrs Adeola Adedeji.
After the IWD address, the panel discussion started as the panelists discussed the theme: Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world. The panel which was Moderated by Tarere Eyimina featured Prof. Sherein Abdelgayed, Dr.Oluwakemi Olurinola and Basia Nasiorowska as panelist.
Our panelists started by sharing interesting stories on their journey to STEM and how they handled leadership positions. One of the panelists, Basia Nasiorowska, stressed that an individual needs to be continuously organised for one to stay ahead of challenges one’s work and businesses will always bring up.
Another panelist, Prof Abdelgayed then explained that according to a global report the percentage of female lecturers are still very low. She also made the case for diversity & inclusion which will drive improved contributions for the economy, national, security and growth.
To encourage women, our panelist, Dr. Olurinola mentioned that moving forward women need to establish a proper organised workstation at home which will both have the home front and work, well organised and catered for to adapt to new challenges.
Dr. Olurinola mentioned how she supported the education sector at the beginning of the pandemic by organising training sessions for teachers to learn online teaching. She also advised that in future everyone will need more tech skills. Agreeing to that, Basia said that your creativity will go a long way to keep you ahead of challenges to adjust to the disruptions of the pandemic.
While concluding Prof. Sherein, stressed that you need to be brave and courageous in facing challenges on what you desire to achieve and not to allow just anybody discourage us from our dreams.
Our Executive Director, Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi rounded off the session by thanking the panelist & attendees. She urged ladies to seize opportunities to learn from successful women to help guide their paths. She closed by highlighting W.TEC’s work & achievements.
