We are thrilled to announce a major milestone for the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC): the successful completion of our first-ever camp in Ondo State!
Held at the Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School in Akure, this 5-day, non-residential Summer STEM Camp ran from August 3rd to August 7th, 2026. Anchored on the inspiring theme “Designing Tomorrow, today,” the program welcomed 12 brilliant girls from both public and private schools.
Our primary purpose for this expansion was clear: to inspire girls toward STEM careers, provide immersive hands-on learning, and create a supportive technology network. Through this camp, we aimed to help these young women develop teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, confidence, and other essential life skills.
Empowering Sessions and Hands-On Workshops
The camp delivered a robust, project-based learning experience. The participants were immersed in a wide variety of subjects and key focus areas, including:
- Core Technology Skills: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Literacy, Introduction to Cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), and Mobile App Development.
- Specialized Workshops: Practical sessions spanning a Design/Software Workshop, Chemical Workshop, Testing Workshop, and Fabrication Workshop.
- Life & Soft Skills: Financial Literacy, Health & Hygiene, Team Bonding, Building a Career in STEM, Gender & Leadership, Mentorship, and Career Development.
A major highlight of the curriculum was a practical AI session where the girls successfully developed an Emergency Distress App!
Real-World Engineering: The NASENI Excursion
To bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, the girls went on an exciting excursion to the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) – Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), located along Akure Road in Ondo State.
During this visit, the girls were introduced to engineering, materials development, and industrial production. They had the opportunity to observe and participate in:
- AutoCAD and other design software.
- Technical drawing and engineering component modelling.
- Chemical processes and materials development.
- Materials/product testing for quality, durability, and safety.
- Fabrication processes and machinery.
- How raw materials are shaped, cut, and assembled into finished products.
